The Gorean merchant fell Tullus into debt and so by law, his daughter Calpurnia could be enslaved to pay the debt. By order of the magistrate, Calpurnia was stripped and displayed in the slave market. The magistrate showed "mercy" and gave Tullus a few days to find the coin to pay his debts. During that time, the magistrate allowed Calpurnia to wear the skimpiest of underclothes and her veils. But of course, the magistrate knew that Tallus would never find the coin to pay off his debt in only a few days. After the deadline expired, Calpurnia was fully stripped, branded, collared, and sold off as a slave.
